Walking Dead showrunner Scott M Gimple has answered speculation that the show may introduce a character who is a gay man in an upcoming season, though he has not shot down questions about the sexuality of Norman Reedus’ character Daryl Dixon.
Gimple confirmed to TVLine.com that there would definitely be a gay male character – but not in the show’s upcoming 5th season.
There has been fan speculation about Daryl being gay which Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman recently encouraged, saying that he had definitely discussed the possibility with the show’s producers, and that it was not something they would be opposed to exploring on the show.
However Gimple said that that aspect of the character will not be explored in the upcoming season, so it is still unknown whether his character will be portrayed as a gay man or a new character who is gay will be added to the show.
‘We know all sorts of things about the characters that we haven’t revealed,’ Gimple told TVLine.com, ‘[But] we’re not holding back information on Daryl’s sexuality as any sort of big reveal.’
‘The fact that there’s still a question as to what Daryl’s orientation is in Season 5 absolutely speaks to Daryl’s character; he is a very guarded, very closed-off individual in a lot of ways. We have been able to see him ever so slowly open up and show the other characters aspect by aspect as to what makes him tick. That’s been a very satisfying journey for all of us on the creative side to portray. [And] he’s still on that journey
‘This is a character who is going to continue to grow closer to the other characters [and] let his guard down, and let them see just who he is, in every way.’
The comic book series that the Walking Dead is based on has only had one prominent gay character to date, Paul ‘Jesus’ Monroe, a long haired bearded martial artist.
However the television version departs in many ways from the original comic book story so it is unknown whether that character will show up in the show.
