Two in One Day: Country Singer Billy Gilman Comes Out
Hot on the heels of country singer Ty Herndon coming out as gay, another country music star -- 26-year-old Billy Gilman -- has also decided to bust down his closet door, USA Today reports:
In a five-and-a-half minute video posted to YouTube Thursday, Billy Gilman said, "It's difficult for me to make this video, not because I'm ashamed of being a gay male artist, or a gay artist, or a gay person. But it's pretty silly to know that I'm ashamed of doing this knowing that ... because I'm in a genre, in an industry that is ashamed of me for being me."
In 2000, Gilman became the youngest singer ever to have a Top 40 hit on Billboard's country singles chart, being just 12 years old when debut single One Voice reached No. 20. Gilman's album of the same name went double platinum, shipping more than 2 million copies. He had one other single, Oklahoma, reach the chart's Top 40...
Gilman says his decision to reveal his sexual orientation came after a reporter took a photograph of him with his partner. "I knew that I'd rather it be from me than you reading it somewhere else and probably filled with 'not truth,'" he says.
Two in one day -- what a great day it is for pro-equality country music fans! Welcome out, Billy!
