Driftwood Fundraiser

Recently I had the privilege of attending a fundraising event in New York City. This was my first trip to NY. I am lucky enough to have a friend who lives in Brooklyn so I was able to stay with him. His apartment is across the street from Marcy's Playground and very close to a subway stop which makes it a pretty convenient location. I arrived on Saturday and my friend Mike met me on the Airtrain to help guide me to his apartment. Once we arrived in Brooklyn from JFK I left my bag at his apartment and we headed out to explore Brooklyn. We ended up in Dumbo (the area under the Brooklyn Bridge). We stopped for some lunch at a pizza place, did a little sight seeing, then returned to his apartment to get dressed for the fundraiser.

The fundraiser was for a website I follow called I'm From Driftwood. This site is one of the two main things which sparked my idea for You Can Be Anything. The creator of I'm From Driftwood is Nathan Manske. He was holding a rooftop BBQ fundraiser to celebrate their IRS approval as a 501c3 organization. They sold tickets to the event which provided you with dinner and drinks. The location was the rooftop of a neat old building in the Financial district of Manhattan. What made the location even cooler is the fact the building is only 6 stories tall and is surrounded by buildings much much taller. They cooked some good Texas BBQ and had plenty of drinks to go around. Towards the end of the evening they had a raffle with various items. Instead of buying raffle tickets I opted for a sure bet and bought one of his books. The event was a lot of fun, and I couldn't have come up with a better way to spend my first night in NY. Everyone at the party was very nice and welcoming.

Some of the other highlights of my trip included:

  • A walk across the Brooklyn bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art's many fascinating exhibits.
  • The Guggenheim's amazing architecture.
  • The enormous size of Grand Central Station.
  • Having ice cream while walking through Central Park.
  • Listening to Whoopi Goldberg describe the universe.
  • Brunch in Hell's Kitchen.

All in all it was a great experience and provided much more inspiration for You Can Be Anything. Be on the look out for updates on a future fundraising event of our own. We hope to have as successful an event as Nathan did.
